What do you miss from 'before'?

I miss getting pleasure out of things. Dining out used to be something I genuinely treasured and counted down to, but these days I feel indifferent, don't crave it, and it hardly feels like it's worth the money or the hassle of leaving the house. The same goes for a good glass of wine - I still want to like it, so every couple of weeks I'll optimistically uncork a bottle, only to pour half a glass and feel nothing. Yes, the benefits clearly beat the drawbacks, but today I'm in a sour mood and found myself longing for the days when wine and chocolate could fix me the way they once did.
This rings true for me too. Our spending has dropped quite a bit since I stopped stocking up on snacks just for myself, and I no longer have any desire to go out. Sure, dining out was never cheap with 7 of us, but I used to insist on doing it several times a week anyway, simply because I enjoyed leaving the house and having something different to eat.

So far, nothing has managed to deliver the same dopamine hit that treats once did — with the strange exception of Brussels sprouts.

with 7 of us, it's pricey

Once the kids menu is off the table for us, it's going to sting even more! Mine are 11, 10, 8, 6 and 4.
Wow, that's really impressive regardless

All-you-can-eat seafood places — I used to hit them several times every month. These days it's pointless: the cost is too high and it just isn't worth it.
Where I live, you won't find those—it looks like they're something you only get near the coast.
Yeah, I'm right by the sea. You got it exactly.
It has been 7 years since we left Oregon. In the middle of the US, decent seafood is basically nonexistent. Of course, you can't get it fresh here, but even finding it frozen is a real struggle. I was raised catching crab and eating halibut and salmon straight from the ocean... it's been more than 7 years since I last had halibut. That definitely stinks. All you ever see is catfish, catfish, catfish. Ugh!
Ugh, catfish live in freshwater and feed off the bottom — I just can't handle that 🤢 yeah, summer is when we go crabbing and clamming, and that's also when the salmon run happens.

Polishing off 0.5 liters of premium ice cream — honey and macadamia, for example. Frozen raspberries mixed into high protein yoghurt with a little artificial sweetener comes close to ice cream, yet it's not truly the same. Every high protein low carb ice cream I've sampled has either been revolting or loaded with artificial sweetener FODMAPs that leave my gut miserable.

Indeed! Whenever I do give in, I almost instantly end up feeling awful. That's actually a plus, since it completely eliminates any lingering cravings for those foods—though it's a bit of a downer to lose that eating pleasure. Still, skipping it is completely worth it!

Two words: Ninja Creami. That machine is fantastic. Essentially, you're able to transform a protein shake into ice cream. You can adjust it to fit any macros you require with great ease. Way better than any low sugar/high protein ice cream you'd find in stores.

Ice cream, no question about it — that's the one thing I can't resist! These days I have yogurt instead, though it just doesn't hit the same. As for soda, the migraine medication I'm on ruins the taste of anything fizzy, so giving that up was never a problem.

I slip in quietly; I enter that absurdly pricey, snooty "creamery," request samples of a few flavors on those tiny little spoons, give a sweet smile, and then stroll my thin self right back out.

I used to get a real kick out of the range and options at ANY buffet. These days, though, they strike me as a total waste of both my time and $$.

The single thing I miss about when I was morbidly obese: I could handle cold weather.

These days, from November through roughly May, I basically stay indoors. I ended up getting sweat pants, long sleeve shirts and slippers to wear at home. Thick wool socks are part of the routine too.

Back then, I could be comfortable in shorts down to about 20 degrees F.

Beyond that, nothing.

I'm not sure whether women experience this differently, but for me the parts that chill fastest and remain chilly the longest are the fatty spots typical of women. For example, my rear and the outer hip areas, plus the rear of my upper arms. They seem to go numb from the cold and remain cold even after the rest of me has largely warmed back up. I'm near a normal BMI at this point, and the same areas still get cold in the same way.

These days, I probably switch the ceiling fan off ahead of business time lol

I'll kick mine off by steering away from all the food talk. Between us, Tirz took 50 pounds off me and 70 off my wife. Don't misunderstand—she looks fantastic—but those curves, I really do miss them.

And I miss the ritual that got us there too: happy hour at the Mexican place we love. $3 espinaca with chips, plus Margaritas at a discount, and more often than not that stretched into a full meal as well. It belonged to us, and it was a great time spent together!

Everything you wrote rings true for me. There's a real worry in the back of my mind about ending up thinner than I'd like. And what I really long for is going all out on Mexican dishes and margaritas.

Stuff I used to do regularly that no longer happens:

  • Sushi buffets where you eat as much as you want
  • Weekend bourbon sessions that emptied 1/2 a bottle
  • Swinging by the gas station for candy
  • Getting home from work, crashing on the couch, and being out cold by 7pm

2 things come to mind, I'd say.

The Brazilian restaurants, where they bring out a gazillion kinds of meats, and being crazy strong and able to lift or move just about anything.

Cocktails used to be something I looked forward to. I never drank much, but an old fashioned at a steakhouse really hit the spot. These days, just thinking about one makes me screw up my face as if I'd caught a whiff of something foul.
honestly, this is so accurate...

without fail, every weekend.

i tell myself i will have a couple of drinks and actually enjoy it. instead i get 2 sips into a spritz and i end up with a brutal hangover off 1 drink..

Drinking until drunk at a work event. After 1, there's a slight buzz, even though I'm aware tomorrow will be rough. By 2, I'm drunk, but it's not a fun "wooo" kind of drunk. Partway into the 3rd, I'm tugging on my work-wife's sleeve and saying, "Uh....I think I need to go home."

I never hit full-on alcoholism, since I didn't drink frequently enough or let it destroy my life, but people could generally depend on me to get loud and drunk at a work function. These days I simply can't, and I miss it.
absolutely! these days it's simply terrible! i find myself longing for it..does that make me a bad person?

Not long ago I visited a Chinese Buffet. If I remember right, the buffet price was $14...however, I chose take out instead, and they charge based on weight after weighing it.

These days I can visit the buffet, leave with $6 of exactly what I wanted, feel quite satisfied, and likely not finish everything...I really enjoy not spending so much money.

I came across a food post on here, which made me scroll through the food photos on my phone... and I realized there was almost nothing healthy saved. Everything was from 'before'. That means before Tirz, before I began eating better and eating less. I used to bake often. These days I don't bake at all. That's definitely where most of my weight gain came from. Below are some of my old food pictures that I sort of miss, though I don't miss the addiction I had to it. Looking at them and recalling my food choices is a bit embarrassing. I only photographed sweets. Because sweets were the only thing I ever wanted to eat. I'd watch the Great British Baking Show and then make whatever they made. If I craved chocolate, I'd whip up a mousse, or choux buns with chocolate creme diplomat or something like that. I love (loved?) cake. I haven't had cake in months.

Is there anything from 'before' that you remember missing, even though you're glad it's in the past?

I hated being a slave to whatever craving I'd get. Tirz has been so life changing.

Ps. The last picture is rather indelicate. I always make that shape for my husband but went a bit too far that time. Still, it was great choux!
Hmmm, what's the deal with your yellow-colored photos?

For me, it's having a good cold cocktail or 2. These days I just don't care for it.
