Which workout do you enjoy most?

Years back, I was all about hiking — it was my thing, and it worked for me. The back trouble I've mentioned around here has shifted from merely annoying to 'I need to see a spine surgeon this week.' On Tuesday I got an MRI, and even my ChatGPT doctor reckoned the findings weren't good... 😳

I'd always figured that at some point, someone or something would inform me hiking was off the table... That thought was right up front when I picked up a pile of ultralight backpacking gear, took a flight to Georgia, and launched myself onto the Appalachian trail a few years ago. Over 2 1/2 months I covered just over a thousand miles, and I got off in Maryland right before turning 60.....It...Was...Glorious!

My advice: never stop moving!....keep pushing and keep your body fit!...I'm not quitting, and sure, there might be more hiking ahead for me, but meh, I'm satisfied with my adventures and have plenty of accomplishments to look back on......and I'm nowhere near dead and will find a new fitness outlet...I hear swimming is low impact...😎👍

This is great — in my family, 2 people have finished the AT (1 did it in segments across multiple years, the other went the thru-hiker route). Hiking is something I really enjoy, though the chance to do it doesn't come around as much as I'd want. Once the kids are older / I have more free time, I can absolutely picture getting out there more.

There's a familiar feeling in your post, because I'm aware that a day will come when I walk onto a basketball court for the final time ... a significant back injury hit me in my early 30s, and so far I've kept it in check with rehab plus the occasional cortisone shot. Add the bone spurs right under my Achilles' heels, and eventually one of those 2 issues will be what ends it for me. Until then, I'm just trying to get as much enjoyment out of it as I can.

As for the gym, my top pick is stacking weight on the hack squat and pairing it with some shoulder thrusters. It's brutally intense, works a lot of muscle groups simultaneously, and it's 1 of the rare movements where I out-lift the guys I train with 😂

Honestly, any routine from Caroline Girvain over on YouTube. It costs nothing, it pushes you, there’s plenty of variety, and the program choices are endless. She is truly the goat. Guys, don’t sleep on her just because she’s a lady…both my husband and I are big fans, and plenty of times she lifts more than my husband does, and he’s no weakling, yet she’s an absolute beast. My suggestion would be to begin with her Iron series, you won’t be sorry!

I stick to a straightforward routine. Every day while I'm working, I do 20 flights of stairs, 1 set of push-ups, and hit no fewer than 10,000 steps. When the weekend comes around, I put in 2 hours with a 60 lb backpack and 3 lb ankle weights on, mixing walking with some kettle ball halos. I'll likely start including farmers carries before long.
