Waking up once every night despite sleeping well…

I’m not on anything, yet I still wake up 2-3 times most nights and usually end up with 4-6 hours of sleep. Reta (or other glp) aren’t the main peptides I care about, but I’m still curious about them, and hearing that it can mess with sleep makes me a bit hesitant to begin it when my sleep is already not that great to start with. I’m sort of wondering what would be best to stack alongside it to help with sleep, but since I’m not planning to start it now, I’ll deal with that when the time comes. I figure if I ever did start reta, I’d probably also run some GH compound with it, since holding onto muscle would be a priority, and I’m wondering whether the GH could help with sleep too. Taking care of 2 things with 1 solution would be nice.

I don’t ever wake during the night. Strange, given how my sleep used to be. For years I struggled with terrible insomnia — I’d consistently wake at 2-3am and be unable to fall back asleep.

Since that kept happening, I deliberately shifted toward biphasic sleeping. Bedtime was 10pm, with an alarm at 2am. From 2am I’d stay up for 2 hours, return to sleep at 4am, set another alarm, and get up at 8am. That approach appeared to make a big difference.

Jump ahead to the present. I have sleep apnea, confirmed through 2 sleep studies. At the time of both studies I was roughly 20-30 lbs overweight. After that I reached 60 lbs overweight, and I’m now back to 30 lbs overweight.

The strange part: I NEVER wake after falling asleep. Whether I get 5-6 hours or 8 hours, I don’t wake. Apparently my breathing stops during that time, but it doesn’t rouse me. I simply get up already exhausted, since my sleep is evidently poor because of the apnea — yet I don’t wake, and I do dream. I’ll urinate right after getting up, but that isn’t what pulls me out of sleep.

There is in fact an FDA approved drug for sleep apnea. It’s called Tirzepatide. It was somewhat amusing when my Dr brought up my apnea recently, probably weeks after I had already started Tirz. I told him ‘there’s this drug, maybe we should try it’. I hope it helps.

I have a lifetime supply of Ambein left over from all those insomnia years, because I almost never took it. It doesn’t improve my sleep and leaves me feeling more lethargic upon waking. I also never get any of the entertaining Ambien effects, like going shopping and buying big screen TVs at 3am with no memory of it. So Ambien sucks.

Is anyone else experiencing this while on Reta? It feels like no matter how exhausted I get, I still wake up 1 time each night. Falling back asleep isn’t a problem for me, but it’s still a bit frustrating.

Hoping to find some fixes. I’d really prefer to sleep straight through the night.

Thanks
Magnesium glycinate is the answer.

Perfectly ordinary, and that holds true even for people who aren't on peptides. I'm not usually one to paste AI-generated 'splanations, but here goes:

Gemini AI Overview

As men age, the typical count of trips to the bathroom during the night climbs gradually. For most adults, getting up 0 to 1 time per night falls within the normal range, but that number tends to drift higher with age because of shifts in kidney function, hormone production, and bladder capacity.

Typical Nighttime Urination by Age (Male)

  • Ages 20–40: The average is 0 to 1 time per night. Roughly 1 in 3 men in this bracket get up at least once to urinate.
  • Ages 45–60: The average is 1 time per night. Getting up more than once generally starts to sit above the normal range for this age group.
  • Ages 65–70+: The average is 1 to 2 times per night. More than 70% of people in this age bracket have at least one episode per night, and as many as 60% of those over 70 get up 2 or more times.
When to Seek Advice

Getting up more than once per night carries the clinical name nocturia. If nighttime urination is breaking up your sleep or occurs more than twice a night, it may signal underlying issues such as an enlarged prostate (BPH), nocturnal polyuria, or sleep apnea.

51 here, and my sleep is great. Still, I have to get up to pee at least twice each night. My prostate is fine — my last bloodwork showed .4 PSA. I simply drink a huge amount of water every day.

I'm up a lot during the night. Last night it happened 4 times. I have to see the urologist. My PSA came back fine at the last BT, but I'm pretty sure it's just an enlarged prostate from age. Lots of my buddies take medication for this.

Early on, this was something I dealt with too. About 60 minutes before hitting the sack, I began using magnesium, and it appears to have made a difference. Even now I’ll stir 1-2 times per night, though it’s typically for a bathroom trip or to turn over.

Each hour, I'm roused 3 times because my fingers go numb. Figured it must be a disc issue in my neck or upper back. Great stuff.

Each night, I'm jolted awake once I've had 4 hours of sleep. Getting back to sleep isn't possible.
I’m dealing with the exact same thing, except I drift in and out for brief stretches. For years I’ve turned in at 8-8:30 because of work, though I’ve been retired for 2 years now. My wife follows the same pattern. Honestly, rising at 4-4:30 is becoming normal to me. I manage to accomplish plenty while the queen stays asleep.

Just once? That sounds like a win to me. My nights go: awake at midnight, then 1 or 2, and falling back asleep is basically impossible. By 4-4:30 every single morning I'm out of bed for good. It kicked in over the last few 6mg doses, and at 8mg now it's brutal.
I’ve got to get up and pee no less than 2 times each night. That was already happening before I started peps. Just one of the joys of aging! 😂

Most nights I'm awake 2-3 times...At my last prostate exam, she told me my prostate looked like that of a 20 year old...I couldn't tell whether that was a medical assessment or flirting... 😳

Yeah, this aging stuff is a real blast.

A female — my neighbor sees a female urologist. He claims he likes her; I don't ask questions.

Before I began glp1, my glucose was all over the place, and I was getting up to urinate 4 to 6 times; after 1 week on tirzepatide that dropped to 2, and at this point it is only 1, which feels wonderful next to how it used to be...

Taking magnesium bisglycinate has clearly improved my sleep during the early hours of the night. Cutting out alcohol helped too, though that one is obvious.

Magnesium supplements made zero difference for my sleep. I'm up 4-6 times each night. That's not what's causing the sleep problems. I've got a urologist visit on 10/1 to look into this and some other issues.

Just once a night? That's nothing! I go through 6-8 liters daily and end up getting up to pee around 3 times each night 🤣

There are a few possible explanations....

Perimenopause (for women)

Stress

Poor sleep habits

Changes or disruptions in breathing

Consuming liquids too near bedtime

Yep, 2-4 times per night for me... typically I get roughly 4 hours of solid sleep, then I'm up, use the bathroom, and hop on here... There are usually some night owls around... 😎
