Reta making me extremely hungry

Hey everyone, a bit of background.

During the previous year I was on Mounjaro for 8 months. The first month was 1 mg, month 2 was 2.5 mg, then 5 mg for 4 months, 7.5 mg for 1 month, and 10 mg for 2 weeks. I dropped 30 kg. The intense appetite suppression that others describe never happened for me, but refusing food became far less difficult, particularly at night.

I have now been off it for roughly 6 weeks and lately began retatrutide.

My initial plan was 30 mg thanks to a New Year promotion, but it was out of stock, so 40 mg arrived instead. First I put 2 ml bacteriostatic water into the vial, pulled out 1 mg, filtered it into a pen cartridge, and then pushed another 2 ml of bac water through a filter into that same cartridge. That should give 20 mg in 3 ml overall. Priming and a bit of leakage appear to have cost me close to 1 ml, though the concentration ought to be unchanged.

Wanting to be careful, I injected 0.5 mg on Monday. On Wednesday I added 0.5 mg more. The following Monday, since I felt nothing, I took 1 mg, and on that Wednesday I added another 1 mg.

Rather than lowering my hunger, it is increasing it. I have not felt this hungry in a very long time. I keep eating. Even after a balanced dinner containing protein, rice and vegetables, I head straight to the fridge and eat more. All of a sudden I want sugary drinks and candy, things I normally do not even like.

Is this expected when beginning retatrutide?

Currently only on reta.

For months you were on 10mg of Tirz, and now you're doing 1mg twice weekly — and you're surprised that you're hungry?

Your approach to reconstitution is odd, and I figure there's a typo in there.

Yeah, I get it. For those roughly 2 months without tirzepatide, I had no issues. But at this moment, my hunger is stronger than it ever was before I began any GLP medication.

My reconstitution might look odd since I mistakenly bought a stronger concentration than I meant to, 40 mg in each vial. So that nothing went to waste, I mixed it and only used half of it, meaning 20 mg, then put the other half in the freezer to save for later.

My current mix is 40mg Reta with 4ml Bac. From the very beginning, when I began at 2mg, my appetite was drastically reduced.

Sadly, the pen cartridge in my possession holds just 3 ml.

It could just be recency bias at play — it seems odd that Reta alone would ramp up your hunger signals.

How is your weight trending?

Any side effects showing up?

What are you aiming for — what are your goals?

What made you move from Tirz over to Reta?

A simple option might be to raise the Reta dose and observe what happens.

I'd be curious to hear whether, in your opinion, the Reta lost potency once it had been reconstituted and then stored in the freezer for a while.

Given that he has taken it for 2 weeks and is experiencing the most extreme hunger, it's likely he lacks a baseline.

My weight fell from 105 kg down to 78 kg, which was not a healthy level. Over Christmas and while traveling in Japan, I put weight back on and reached 85 kg. No side effects showed up for me at all. Tirzepatide also never gave me any side effects.

Body fat went from 32 percent to 18 percent. Getting below 15 percent is what I am aiming for. The reason I made the change to retatrutide was that Mounjaro was running me 600 euros each month.

Twice a week I play tennis, four times a week I swim, four times a week I go to the gym, and I cycle on a regular basis.

Moving up to 4 mg is what I think I will do.

I haven't touched the frozen reta. Only the remaining portion

From what I’ve come across, reta’s appetite-suppressing effect only shows up near 8 mg. I gave it a few months myself, then went back to T. R was fine by me, yet the scale wouldn’t budge — and honestly that suited me, since my goal was to halt the weight loss. (Typing that feels insane! I was aiming to stop losing! WTaF!) The thing is, R lacks the inflammation control that T provides, and that’s something I can’t do without.

Hmm, I had high hopes that retatrutide's third fat-burning pathway would really change things. I'll give it some time and observe the results. I can't help but question if the product I have is fake, since Mounjaro gave me some effect even at 1 mg.

Of course! That explains everything. Once you reach that point, I really want to hear about it. According to research papers, it loses effectiveness when it's mixed and then put in the freezer. A few online lab rats claim it breaks down a little. My own lab rat will have the answer in a couple of months. I'll write up what happens in its own post then—and I'd love to hear how it goes for you as well.

Based on what I've come across, that third receptor doesn't really start working properly until you're past 6mg, though some people say it takes less. Right now I'm just on 3 this month, and I plan to go up to 4 next month, that's what I'm expecting

Going the standard way would take ages, huh. My plan is to bump to 4 mg by week 3. Maybe my earlier tirzepatide use built up some tolerance—guess I'll see.

Once retatrutide has been reconstituted, it should not be frozen. The entire vial should be used; even after 60 days, reconstituted retatrutide does not undergo any meaningful degradation. Because bacterial growth is the primary concern when using it beyond 4 weeks, I strongly suggest filtering.

Full potency takes about 1 month to build up in your system. When you bump the dose every 3 weeks, there’s no chance for that full potency to be reached. Relying on how it “feels” is an easy path to problems. Let it have the time it needs to do its job.

Do you not believe that Mounjaro has made my body accustomed to GLP?

That isn't how these medications operate, and it isn't about your system becoming “accustomed” to GLP drugs. This is simply how they function for everybody. 🙄

Sure, I realize that’s the intended mechanism, but responses vary from person to person. There are those who pick up effects as low as 0.5 mg, while others remain unaware of anything until reaching 8 mg after several months. I’ll report back once I hit 4
