KLOW is fighting me on the filter

So, a KLOW kit has landed and I am about to break it open, which meant digging the tackle box out and getting to work. It went into 3mL of Hospira BAC water and that part behaved perfectly.

I am pushing it through into a 3mL pen cartridge, so everything gets wiped down and the venting needle goes into the cartridge first. Next I fixed my 13mm, .22u PES filter onto the syringe and slid the luer lock needle over the slip end of it. The opening two mL passed without complaint, but coaxing the final .5 mL through the filter was a nightmare. Blowing the filter out was the last thing I wanted, so once it became brutally hard to push I simply called it a day.

Nothing particulate showed up in the vial before filtering, and I had left it sitting for about twenty minutes after reconstituting. I am trying to work out where I went wrong, or whether KLOW has given anyone else this kind of trouble.

How to filter is a total mystery to me, but my tackle box only arrived tonight so I will be filtering everything from here on. Having watched a few videos, my one thought - and it may be nonsense - is whether you could not simply pull the needle out, point it up at the ceiling and fit a fresh filter and needle, then push the remaining ML through. If that is not it, could it be that too much Klow stays behind in the old filter? You could always draw the lot back. Only a thought. Once again, I have not the faintest idea what I am doing and am still learning.

So, I've got a kit for KLOW I am about to start using, so I got out my tackle box and went to work. Reconstituted with 3mL of Hospira BAC water and everything there went well.

I'm filtering into a 3mL pen cartridge, so I clean everything with wipes and first insert my venting needle in the cartridge. I then affixed my 13mm, .22u PES filter to my syringe, and then slipped the luer lock needle over the slip end of the filter. First two mL went through fine, but I was having a hell of a time getting the last .5 mL to pass through the filter. I didn't want to blow out the filter, but it got incredibly difficult to squeeze, so I just stopped.

I didn't see any particulate in the vial pre-filter, and I let it sit about twenty minutes after reconstituting. Trying to figure out what I did wrong here, or if anyone has had issues filtering KLOW.

From what I understand, the smaller filter — 4mm, if I'm not mistaken — is the one to go with. That way more of the liquid comes through and less gets left behind.

This has happened to me more than once. The problem is likely the syringe itself. Put on a new syringe and the flow should be smooth.

Switching to a "tighter" filter will not help at all. For larger blends such as klow, you actually need a larger pore size.

A smaller filter definitely leaves less behind. A flush can help with this. I push 7 units through a 4mm filter and 20 units through a 13mm filter. Do I recover everything? No. But diminishing returns and all...

Also, and I realize this may be controversial, pushing product through a smaller filter is easier. Why? Because the, say, 40 newtons of force your thumb applies to the plunger only has to act on 1.33 cm², versus .13 cm² for the 4mm filter.

The downside is that this makes blowing out a 4mm filter much easier. And, yes, they can clog up much more easily.
