I like your context and the way you handle it more than mine, I think. I did give her grace; it sounds harsher here than the jokey manner in which I said it IRL. It does bother me though! Why bother comparing, or denigrating oneself or regretting choices? To applaud someone else? Doesn't make me feel great. I'm sure it didn't make her feel great, either. Our lives are so vastly different and that isn't a good or bad thing. It just is. I think the biggest issue with that interaction is how difficult my life has been, but outsiders looking in think it's great 'cause I got some salmon and a nice face n bod. It's.... I guess, dismissive of my experience and a narrow, ultimately conceited perception. The other issue is that I'm sure her kid heard, and I don't imagine comments like that make him feel great. I thought he was a well behaved little guy, all things considering in a Costco.

And you know, now that I consider it more, I think your response wasn't too harsh. I was imagining the tired women who say that to ME, and how it sounds wistful and I'm not bothered because my life kinda IS as much-as-I-like-it as it looks to a casual observer. But god, what if she'd said that to someone who was having or had infertility struggles; it would have stung them so badly.
