Does Huberman have inside info?

The comparison I keep coming back to is Napster and music sharing versus the RIAA.

Free music downloads never fully disappeared — provided you're ready to do the digging and locate whatever the underground equivalent is to the companies that sell music. It simply sits further out of sight and takes a handful of additional moves compared with opening Napster and entering a track title. Even so, these days the majority of listeners simply hand over money for their music, be it a subscription, iTunes, or some other route, since the price isn't high and the initial process is far less confusing. With enough paying customers, the RIAA stopped actively chasing the leftover underground sharing channels. Keep in mind that at one stage the RIAA was slapping individual people across the country with lawsuits in bulk and pressuring them into settlement payments, all to scare people away from sharing music.

In the same way, the black or gray peptide market isn't going anywhere entirely, but my guess is that far more pressure gets directed at pushing it deep underground. Most ordinary folks are completely fine dropping a dollar or 2 on a track they enjoy, yet when a weight loss subscription runs into the hundreds of dollars each month, that price is steep enough that the same ordinary folks will gladly do a lot more legwork hunting down other suppliers. What an actual crackdown looks like, I can't say, but one thing I'm certain of: it will be chased relentlessly until the industry feels it has locked up no less than 80% of the market by any ethical — or possibly unethical — route available to it.

What he means by "the gray" is those US-based resellers, websites, and social media peddlers.

His point stands. To shut down anyone eating into their profits, Big Pharma will grease any wheel necessary. Safety will be the stated reason, but don't kid yourself — it's about money and shareholder returns.

One crossfit gym nearby charges $350 for 20mg of Reta. That cash is what Big Pharma is after.

That claim has been circulating since March 2024.

For months, he's been going on and on about grey markets and an impending crackdown. For some reason, it comes across as almost personal.

Huberman tends to be fairly open minded on most subjects, so his strong negativity here is puzzling—unless there's some financial stake he hasn't revealed.
Exactly right.

Still, it isn't hidden. All you need to do is piece together every sponsor he has. In my view, if peptides are part of our routine, then none of those sponsor products are necessary for us.

Right now I've got 5 kits sitting in the freezer, and I plan on picking up 2 more anyway. I'm just trying to figure out which vendor to go with, or whether I should hold off until a pre-buy sale comes around.

That's precisely what I think too.

That's precisely it. Still, there's no harm in stocking up on a handful of extra kits for the freezer when it helps you feel more at ease.

Black and gray markets have existed forever. Finding them might simply require digging deeper. I don't think there's much reason to stress over it. Simply buy in bulk whenever your budget allows.

In certain respects, their approach to markets is even more capitalist than ours. Anywhere a profit can be extracted, they will make the attempt. What surprises me is that nobody has brought up the extraordinary degree of corruption at play here. Across large parts of the globe, slipping someone money to ignore what you're doing — or, at worst, giving them a cut — is simply how things get done.
The same thing holds true for the US as well, and it's especially relevant these days. There are plenty of legitimate-sounding terms for it—"vertical integration" being just 1 example.

I realize this is only a summary, yet it doesn't give a truly unambiguous picture of what the new laws say. - based on the post above. Seeing the actual text of these laws, or understanding how they'd be applied in real situations, would be quite revealing. Vague legislation that depends on insider party approval to stay clear of legal or party trouble is something China is famous for.

"The modified rules also tighten the management of drug manufacturing. Management requirements for the production and sale of traditional Chinese medicine decoction pieces and granules are clarified.

In the area of distribution and use, these regulations improve oversight of online drug sales and place greater responsibility on third-party e-commerce platform operators."

Putting peptides into vials isn't difficult, since it only calls for equipment costing a few or a few tens of thousands, but actually producing them is difficult, and if rules alter how such companies may function and how or to whom they may sell, availability could be wiped out. A genuine black market peptide manufacturing operation inside China that manages to stay hidden from the government and needs millions in equipment is a far harder thing to pull off.
Regarding the smaller operations: after GYC went missing briefly in June because of an "inspection," my view has been that China would play the larger role in enforcement. Then SSA and SRY also vanished, which made it look like Beijing holds every advantage.
If my memory serves, they claimed it was anticipated and nothing to fret about. Under 2 weeks after that, sales resumed.

Now SRY has returned, and R30 became available today over on the US side. QSC got shut down, yet QSC is up again. The grey market never stays still, but what I have yet to observe is any reduction in its size.

He probably has strong connections, no doubt, but China can't be halted. They made steroids illegal, yet they're still easy to get for anyone who wants them.
Given that, my guess is Huberman ends up backing a compounding pharmacy service before this year is over.

That's a solid observation. Sure, the fresh regulations and a few suppliers vanishing last year are enough to make anyone uneasy. Still, that unease is baked into the gray itself — some degree of risk exists no matter how reliable your source is.

Gray and black markets have been around forever, and as others have pointed out, history suggests they aren't going anywhere.

Having insurance doesn't hurt either — I've got a few extra kits inbound and intend to stack a few more before summer arrives.

Nobody knows what's coming, and our ability to steer it is basically nil. The most we can do is get ready (hence those extra kits in the freezer) and roll with the punches as needed.

This is exactly why I appreciate communities like this one. Trading info, talking things through, and possibly helping one another adjust when or if it becomes necessary.

Keep those lovely RUO peptides coming! They might not be meant for human use, but damn if they don't deliver. 🤣
