I'm considering getting coinbase going so I can move usdc over to my exodus wallet on sol, and since I'm located in Canada I stumbled on Paytrie. From what I gather, with Paytrie you simply send them an e-transfer, they purchase the usdc, and it lands in your external wallet on its own — basically a cheap set-and-forget option, unlike coinbase where the transfer is something you have to do manually.

Anyone here tried paytrie?

Another thing — does going through a service like this cancel out the added protection that having a separate wallet gives you?

And finally — is there any upside or added safety in picking a cold wallet over a hot one? For example, when it comes to authorities tracing what I buy? (I do my buying on my desktop.) I get that losing my device means losing my crypto — that's a downside — and with a hot wallet like exodus, if they vanish, so does my crypto.

I'm pretty new to crypto — any help or advice is appreciated!

I'm considering getting this cold wallet since it comes with 3 cards for backup purposes. According to this YouTuber, who owns a lot of wallets, you shouldn't keep all your crypto in a single wallet—um, wallet, lol.

Larger trading platforms absolutely monitor and retain data about the destinations of your withdrawals. It's always preferable to purchase through an exchange, then move the funds into a wallet you control yourself. Never send payment straight to a seller from an exchange.

Several well-known "cold storage wallet" brands have suffered breaches recently, caused by flaws in the software that generates wallet security — the randomness wasn't strong enough. My view: simple self-custody wallets are a safe bet (arguably the better choice). Just jot the seed/recovery phrase onto paper, tuck it inside a book on your shelf, and you'll be able to restore access through any wallet provider, on any device.

When it comes to things like grey purchases, I treat wallets as disposable. I'll spin one up, use it to receive and send payments a handful of times, then replace it with a fresh one every few months.

My one concern with Paytrie is that it introduces an extra layer of possible hassle without delivering much convenience. With automatic convert/swap/send services, transactions sometimes get stuck and you end up having to reach out to support. I wouldn't want my vendor sitting there waiting for payment while my crypto is gone and support is either inadequate or silent. On top of that, services of this kind appear and disappear.. frequently (I've been involved in crypto since 2010).

I'd rather stick with a reputable exchange and keep everything entirely under my own control.

Debit Card -> Purchase USDC -> Send to self custody wallet (Just keep $5 of Solana in it for transaction fees. I personally currently like Phantom wallet for Solana. It supports most blockchains also, but Solana has the cheapest transaction fees) -> Send Payment to vendor

Hopefully that cleared up at least 1 of your questions 😅

Amazon has it listed at 86.00 - if you end up getting one, tell me what you think of it!

As for paytrie, I've set it up and I'm happy with it.....

Right now I have exodus and phantom installed - though for sending payments to my overseas vendors, a cold wallet would be the smarter route, if you catch my meaning! I figure you're dealing with the same worries!
