There are times when my appetite is completely gone. Hunger isn’t there, and the idea of eating seems unappealing. Yet the moment I take a bite, stopping becomes surprisingly difficult.

Yesterday was one of those days. With zero appetite, I began with 1 piece of corn… and before I knew it, I’d also had a slice of bread, a peach, an egg, and a cup of yogurt.

It wasn’t hunger driving it — more like after that first bite, I just kept wanting more.

Has this happened to anyone else?

There have been a handful of days when all I wanted was just a tiny bit of anything and everything — as though nothing could satisfy whatever my body was asking for. I literally nibbled small bits of this and that, hunting for it.

For me, that’s what I call the gummy.

Something comparable happened to me at dinner yesterday. Physically I was quite hungry, since 7 hours had passed without food, yet mentally there was no hunger at all. The moment I began eating, though, a compulsion came over me to swallow the whole meal in a single bite. My girlfriend rescued me on this occasion by asking whether I had even chewed anything? That snapped me out of it and I quit eating like a pig. 🐷

My guess is that the reward system in your brain, dopamine pathways included, got switched on by those foods heavy in carbs. Once that happens, stopping can become difficult.

My own pattern is 1 meal a day, largely meat and fat. The moment I take even a single bite of carbs, intense hunger hits right away, and that pull continues until I’ve been off carbs for roughly 3 days.

Yep, I've been there. I'd have a single bite of something sweet just to quiet the craving, and then toss whatever was left.

Yep, that happens to me as well. My eating pace is pretty quick by nature, which means I constantly need to remind myself to take it easy and spend more time chewing.

That’s happened to me as well. When it does, you could try having some water — occasionally it’s just thirst.

That reminds me a lot of how things were for me before GLP medications. If I ate even a little of something rich, highly rewarding, or high on the glycemic index, I'd be starving again before long, and quitting eating felt nearly impossible. Luckily, GLP drugs combined with staying away from those foods has pretty much wiped out that binge eating problem for me.

It really does sound like some kind of carb reaction. On top of that, a little GLP-related food aversion could be at play, which would explain why a lot of foods just don't seem appealing. Was this happening before you began GLP drugs? Have you dropped a significant amount of weight? When you lose a lot of weight, your body can ramp up hunger dramatically if it senses food nearby, triggered by eating even a small amount of something it wants. If you haven't been on GLPs very long but are still pushing a low calorie diet before the drugs have fully taken effect or before you've reached a solid dose, chances are it will improve at higher doses. For me, one of the clearest early effects of starting GLPs was feeling full after much smaller portions. I believe this happens for everyone, and it's part of why these drugs work so well for weight loss.

The main way I got hunger under control was by working a good amount of protein into most meals. Gram for gram, protein fills you up more than almost anything else, and it's far harder to keep overeating protein because your body eventually just signals you to quit. Maybe also steer clear of carb-only or high glycemic index foods, or pair them with something that contains protein?

Healthy eating and normal meals are fine for me, yet I can't leave fine pastries, chocolate, my favorite candy, or popcorn where I can see them. They summon the golem inside me.

I've run into something along those lines. Take a day when I'm not hungry at all, yet at some point I still have to force myself to eat because it's a workout day and I need to get protein in. So I start by making myself eat, and partway through, a little hunger shows up. It's nothing major, but the moment I'm done with the meal I had planned, I start wanting to snack on something extra. If I can hold out for 15-20 minutes without eating anything else, though, this total fullness settles in and the cravings disappear...

For the last 2-3 weeks I’ve stayed really solid about not snacking, yet last night I dreamed I was wolfing down a bunch of my go-to treats 😭.

Huh, it just hit me — this must be what life without food noise feels like 🙂.

Most of the time I'm not really hungry in the slightest, and I get full quickly after starting to eat. Still, I do eat.

Oh, so you've got one of those... What's it like when you drive? You don't need Google Maps? Haha... just messing with you. I've got one as well...

I'm dealing with this at the moment: I feel hungry, yet I can skip eating, although I really ought to, so I can boost my protein intake

Yeah, it hits me every now and then, though I feel like I can keep it under control. Everything you listed as eating is a solid option, really—it just comes down to what your body needs. For me, the sequence plays out just like yours: I'll nibble a bit of this, then a bit of that, instead of going overboard on a single item—no 7 cookies or half a cake in one go.

What I’ve noticed is that when the dose goes up, and when I use more GLP’s, both hunger and cravings get easier to manage, and it also seems like the urge to keep eating unhealthy food is reduced if I have just a small amount.. ( which is pretty much what you’d expect ) I didn’t begin any of them until after most of the weight was already gone, so my main focus was simply how hungry I felt, how frequently I wanted unhealthy food., and whether the scales moved up or down. While trying to hold onto a 55% body weight loss, adding 5mg of reta to 15mg of tirz was helpful, and adding a bit of cagri was helpful too. The goal I’m aiming for is a dose or doses where my appetite lines up with the calories I need to stay weight neutral. That kind of strategy only really makes sense if the aim is to reach or keep very large weight losses.
