A Pittsburgh-area news outlet aired a report about a criminal who discovered a way to intercept currency while it was being transferred. Apparently, several people attempted to send currency, but it was taken before it arrived. Has anyone else come across anything like this? Stay alert! !

Could you share a link to that news article? Aside from a ransomware attack on Transit Rail, I can't find any recent Pittsburgh news story through Google.

As long as the Zelle / Venmo you’re sending to is the right one, the money will land in that right Zelle / Venmo.

My wife told me about it, and I believe it aired on WPXI, which is channel 11 out of Pittsburgh. I'm on the job right now, so I haven't looked at their website. They put recent news stories up there. I'll send her a text to confirm.

I checked and saw criticism aimed at both. All I came across were folks who messed up sending money the right way, sort of a pile of complaints. Nothing solid showing deliberate stealing. Only buzz.

The piece appeared to focus more on who you're sending money to through payment apps. I caught just a bit of it before they cut away for breaking news. The reporter covering the topic was Clark Howard. I figured I'd ask the helpful people here whether anything about this has shown up on the forum's radar. Appreciate the replies. My wife gets concerned—to her, I come across as a prime scammer magnet. She's not wrong 😆

This looks like the usual careless kind of "reporting" meant to scare folks who aren't informed, so they stay holed up in their basement and refuse to ever pay anyone through an online service.

If this were real, it would be leading every national newscast — the very fact that it isn't is the clearest sign that the "facts" (or at least the version you laid out) don't hold up at all. Were someone truly grabbing Zelle and Venmo transfers before they got to the people they were meant for, it would be the only thing anyone was discussing.

I'm with everyone else who replied — this reporter is probably just stretching things out to fill his "ask Clark" slot. I checked with people in a few other social circles, and none of them have come across anything past this one-off case. Guess I needed the reassurance of hearing it from several people. ✌️
