What is the origin of those numbers?
Are you asking where the Batch # can be found?
Nope—my question was whether the problem starts at the factory or at the testing site. The batch I shared earlier carries a different number. The cap looks identical, yet the place I use got excellent test results. I notice plenty of posts calling out specific cap colors, but wouldn’t batch numbers give a more precise picture? I’m just asking out of curiosity—I’m new here and still figuring out how all of this operates.
A few vendors take batch numbers seriously, which is what makes those numbers worth paying attention to. With others, they claim to assign them, yet the same numbers keep getting reused, so they end up telling you almost nothing.
Plenty of vendors don't list batch numbers whatsoever, which pushes people toward using cap color instead. The problem is that cap color can shift at any moment, a color can run out partway through a batch, or a vendor may simply not want to use a given color — so it's unreliable and never fully precise, though at times it's the only option available. There have also been problems that crossed several different cap colors.
So testing ends up being the sole reliable method to know precisely what you have, whether you test it yourself, someone in the group tests and shares the results, or you sign up with a group that handles testing and contribute. Testing groups exist across the interwebs, and these days they carry more weight than ever.
