Hi everyone,
New here, and a proper introduction felt due. I am from the U.S., in my 40s, and for most of my adult life weight has been a struggle. More times than I can count the usual cycle has played out: some weight comes off, hope shows up, stress arrives, it all comes back, and the whole thing begins again. GLP-1 medications kept coming up more and more over the last year, and curiosity got hold of me, since so many people appeared to be getting real results.
Handling it in the smartest way is not what I did at first. Slowing down and going through a proper medical path was not what happened; TikTok videos became my source instead. Weight loss, side effects, meals, and weekly progress were what people talked about to begin with. Then the algorithm began feeding me more aggressive videos: “affordable options,” “no insurance needed,” “limited spots,” before-and-after clips, and comment sections full of people saying things like “DM me” or “this changed my life.”
One video stood out as very convincing. Cartoonish flashiness was not what it had. A regular person talking into their phone was what it looked like, explaining how access had been a struggle and then “found another way.” The comments made it feel even more real. Questions were being asked, someone claimed their package arrived fast, and a few accounts were saying they had already lost weight. Much of it could have been fake or planted, looking back, but at the time I wanted to believe it.
A message went out to someone connected to that video. Friendly at first, and everything was made to sound simple. A few basic questions were asked, a lot of health-sounding language was used, and I was reassured again and again that many people were doing the same thing. Red flags were there: answers that stayed vague, pressure to act quickly, nothing clear about a pharmacy, and a lot of “don’t worry, we take care of everything.” Those signs got ignored because I was frustrated, embarrassed, and honestly desperate to feel like I was finally doing something.
Payment came first; the tone changed after. Within minutes the replies arrived before paying. Excuses started once payment was made. First “processing.” Then “shipping delay.” Then “tracking will update soon.” Then a supposed issue with the label. Shorter and colder the messages became, and eventually I was ignored completely. What I thought I was paying for never arrived, and I felt stupid, angry, and ashamed.
Money was lost, but realizing how easy it is to get manipulated when you are hopeful and vulnerable was the bigger lesson. Everything felt normal on TikTok because the same kind of content came up over and over until it seemed like everyone was doing it. Safety and legitimacy, I know now, are not the same thing as social media confidence.
Sources are not something I am here to ask for, nor is discussing where to get anything. The new member rules have been read, and as a new member especially I understand this is not the place for that. Learning, reading, and hopefully resetting my approach with more patience and common sense is the plan. Glad to be here and grateful for the chance to learn from people who have been around this longer than I have.
