Hi everyone,

New here, and a proper introduction felt due. I am from the U.S., in my 40s, and for most of my adult life weight has been a struggle. More times than I can count the usual cycle has played out: some weight comes off, hope shows up, stress arrives, it all comes back, and the whole thing begins again. GLP-1 medications kept coming up more and more over the last year, and curiosity got hold of me, since so many people appeared to be getting real results.

Handling it in the smartest way is not what I did at first. Slowing down and going through a proper medical path was not what happened; TikTok videos became my source instead. Weight loss, side effects, meals, and weekly progress were what people talked about to begin with. Then the algorithm began feeding me more aggressive videos: “affordable options,” “no insurance needed,” “limited spots,” before-and-after clips, and comment sections full of people saying things like “DM me” or “this changed my life.”

One video stood out as very convincing. Cartoonish flashiness was not what it had. A regular person talking into their phone was what it looked like, explaining how access had been a struggle and then “found another way.” The comments made it feel even more real. Questions were being asked, someone claimed their package arrived fast, and a few accounts were saying they had already lost weight. Much of it could have been fake or planted, looking back, but at the time I wanted to believe it.

A message went out to someone connected to that video. Friendly at first, and everything was made to sound simple. A few basic questions were asked, a lot of health-sounding language was used, and I was reassured again and again that many people were doing the same thing. Red flags were there: answers that stayed vague, pressure to act quickly, nothing clear about a pharmacy, and a lot of “don’t worry, we take care of everything.” Those signs got ignored because I was frustrated, embarrassed, and honestly desperate to feel like I was finally doing something.

Payment came first; the tone changed after. Within minutes the replies arrived before paying. Excuses started once payment was made. First “processing.” Then “shipping delay.” Then “tracking will update soon.” Then a supposed issue with the label. Shorter and colder the messages became, and eventually I was ignored completely. What I thought I was paying for never arrived, and I felt stupid, angry, and ashamed.

Money was lost, but realizing how easy it is to get manipulated when you are hopeful and vulnerable was the bigger lesson. Everything felt normal on TikTok because the same kind of content came up over and over until it seemed like everyone was doing it. Safety and legitimacy, I know now, are not the same thing as social media confidence.

Sources are not something I am here to ask for, nor is discussing where to get anything. The new member rules have been read, and as a new member especially I understand this is not the place for that. Learning, reading, and hopefully resetting my approach with more patience and common sense is the plan. Glad to be here and grateful for the chance to learn from people who have been around this longer than I have.

Glad to have you! I'm fairly new myself, but I've picked up quite a bit. Enjoy digging into the info!

Thanks! 😊 I'm also still figuring out how everything works.

Stick around and participate for a while, and you'll discover all the stuff you need 😆 The people in this place back each other up like crazy (honestly, when it comes to this kind of thing, they've shown me way more support than my own parents ever did, which really opened my eyes). Glad to have you join the forum, and I hope your time here treats you well !

Sounds like you've thought about what went down and are prepared to take things at a slower pace.

Do plenty of reading; familiarize yourself with how things work around here, and hold off on making your first purchase until you've got a solid grasp of the fundamentals.

Welcome!

I get exactly what you're going through. Before I finally got it together and used telemedicine, I almost got taken by a similar scam. I've dropped a fair amount of weight that way, but the cost is climbing, and I'm looking to bring in other items the teledocs won't handle, so I began reading, and reading, and then even more reading! The amount of info on here is overwhelming to absorb, so for the time being I'm focusing only on the peps that catch my interest.

Welcome aboard fellow newby! Read read read!

Oh and the people here are amazing as well!

I nearly ended up in that same spot — TikTok fitness influencers had me convinced it was the ideal route. When I got in touch, my reaction was: these prices are absurdly steep, wasn't this supposed to be affordable?

Finding this community has been such a relief; no forum has ever made me feel this backed up, and every one of us is on the same path 🙏🏼

Wishing each of you the very best on your journey

Wow, this really hits home. When I dropped 200 in my 20s, one of the rudest awakenings was realizing how few people were actually in my corner, back when I was just naive. This community has already made a strong impression on me. Now that I'm doing this again in my 20s, I'm picking up a whole new set of tricks.

And OP, even if you're incredibly sharp, these situations still happen; last year I went through something similar with a job prospect, and considering everything I've accomplished professionally in NYC, it didn't feel far-fetched, yet the lie was just beneath believable. A friend pulled me aside and intervened before I sank too far in. I'm happy you've landed somewhere better, and cut yourself some slack!

Welcome! You aren't the only one who's been taken in by social media scammers, and you certainly won't be the last, so go easy on yourself. The upside is that from here on you'll be appropriately wary and know which red flags to look for. It's a good thing you ended up here. Wishing you the best with your goals!
