A systematic review and meta-analysis from 2026 covering more than 21,000 patients.

This study, which appeared in Renal Failure, gives a thorough overview of how well GLP-1 works and how safe it is: Meta-analysis study

Main favorable results:

1. Among people with kidney disease, GLP-1s lowered the chance of serious kidney events by 16%;

2. GLP-1s brought down albuminuria (protein escaping from the kidney into urine), an early indicator of kidney strain;

3. GLP-1s cut major heart and stroke events by 16%;

4. GLP-1s decreased "renal sinus fat" (fat surrounding the kidneys), which lightens the burden on the heart;

5. GLP-1s lowered all-cause mortality by 17%;

6. GLP-1s decreased systemic inflammation, shielding the heart, brain, and kidneys at the same time.

Main unfavorable results:

1. GLP-1s temporarily raised nausea four-fold;

2. GLP-1s temporarily raised vomiting or diarrhea three-fold.

Man, meta analyses are the best. Even better when they focus on one particular area, so the researchers can really drill into how it helps a specific function rather than just the broad picture. Just so we're clear (in case the journal title didn't give it away), this one zeroed in on chronic kidney disease outcomes, not every effect of GLP-1s - which is likely what a lot of folks would actually want. And even though I'm not injecting myself just for my kidneys, it's still good to hear that these particular advantages are real.
