Hi all,

I joined this forum in the hope of connecting with people who are either on a comparable path at the moment or have already walked it.

My diagnosis is type 1 diabetes. A test 2 months ago showed strongly positive antibodies, and I have needed insulin since 2021.

The real turning point came in 2023, when I set out to overhaul my entire life. Drugs and alcohol had a hold on me. I entered detox during the summer of 2023. Back then my weight was roughly 160 kg. Long-term therapy helped me drop 16 kg. But between January 2024 and April 2024, I put 18 kg back on. My blood sugar threatened to spiral completely out of control.

By that stage, keeping my blood sugar even somewhat steady required over 300 units of bolus insulin plus 120 units of basal insulin daily. My HbA1c had climbed from 6.1 to 8.4 over that period. Because a hospital stay was something I truly wanted to avoid, I asked my diabetologist about trying Wegovy (semaglutide) off-label, in the hope of stopping a full metabolic collapse.

On semaglutide, I shed roughly 22 kg in a little under 7 months. Caution was necessary, since with insulin doses that extreme, hypoglycemia was a constant danger. For that reason, I was told to take the weight loss somewhat slower.

A slow regain began in May 2025, so my treatment was changed to Mounjaro. Now, 1 more year on, I need just 25 units of basal insulin in the evening. Bolus insulin is no longer required at all. In total, I have lost 44 kg by now. At present I take 15 mg of Mounjaro and have hit a plateau.

There is 1 more thing I want to add: ever since I began addiction treatment, I have stayed away from drugs and alcohol. Nicotine is the only thing I still permit myself.

T2D here. Posts like this make me happy. My family is a mix of T1/T2, and semaglutide plus tirzepatide have worked wonders for the ones of us still here to take them (me included lol.)

Congratulations! 💜

Wow, that's fascinating. I had no idea Tirzepatide might be useful for T1 Diabetes. These GLP medications really are genuine marvels of medicine.

First off, I really appreciate all the nice things everyone said! 🙂

I don't know whether continuing this thread here is the proper spot in this forum. Could somebody let me know if that's fine?

Is your body still capable of producing any of its own insulin?

Certain peptides (mots-c) may help safeguard b cells and could even bring back a bit of their function.

Thanks for posting, you have an inspirational story.

I really appreciate the encouragement — it means a lot to hear that.

That was news to me, though a few months back I had my c-peptide checked. It showed there’s barely any output remaining. Still, your point lines up with what I’ve been wondering: what pathway exactly is behind me getting close to stopping insulin?

Nice work. For me, an unforeseen effect is that skipping the evening wine or beer has become far simpler, and my A1C — while still below diabetic thresholds — fell 4 points from one blood test to the next.

Thanks for telling us about your experience. One thing I’m curious about: once you began the glp process, did your blood sugar stay elevated because food lingers in the body for a longer time?

In my case I don’t use insulin at all, though metformin is part of my routine. Lately my blood sugar has been running noticeably higher during the day than it did before I started it.

That is amazing, dude! At first I used sema to shed pounds, and not long ago I made the change to tirz. It is pretty wild that glps can assist with addiction across the board! Your progress makes me really glad!

Good question! I went back through my log of blood sugar readings, and my situation was the reverse. Those extreme highs vanished nearly right away, and my levels became steadier. If anything, I had to pay closer attention and keep an eye on my blood sugar. Every so often I’d get lows. The lowest reading I recorded was 52 mg/dl. It didn’t feel great, but I never needed hospital care. Most of the time it happened at night while I was asleep, and also during or after sex with my gf. I kept reducing my insulin doses again and again.

So unfortunately, I have nothing to share about metformin together with glp‘s

Thanks ! 🙂

It never crossed my mind that the glp‘s were also a factor in staying sober.

It's honestly amazing what these peps are capable of! Wishing you all the best and continued success staying off drugs! Great job! 💪
