I'm 38, female, and fairly new to sourcing peps this way. Tirz was my starting point in April 2023, at 185lbs. Going way back, 2007 had me at 220 until a “right, I've had enough” moment sent me into 18 months of diet and exercise that got me down to 130. I held around there for a couple of years, then a relationship that wasn't great brought stress, and the stress brought off 20 lbs.

My husband and I met in 2012, and happy weight arrived, followed by extra super-duper happy weight that parked me at 135/140. Graduate school added +20lbs. Then 2021 arrived: COVID, my last clinical rotation, my mother's first heart attack, and my husband diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer with 12 months given (he's still with us and doing far better than his team predicted, and so is momma bear). A single year was enough to pile on 30 more lbs (can't win! Stress and depression mean unintentional weight loss but WAIT!!….weight gain too).

Whatever my mind and body managed back in 2007, there's nowhere near that much bandwidth available now, and I couldn't stand the sight of myself — enter tirzep, and honestly, what a miracle. Paying $350/month for compounded/telehealth felt entirely worthwhile, right up until cancer showed how costly things get once insurance starts deciding what it will cover. Soooo here I am. Around 6 weeks back I moved to “grey?” market reta, and I'm not convinced it was the right call. On tirzep I had 0 side effects and it worked beautifully; on reta there's nausea, more food noise, and HORRIBLE SLEEP.

Anywhoo, this forum has already given me a lot of genuinely good info, and I'm looking forward to soaking up much much more.

A little unsolicited cancer advice, given what a health-aware crowd this is, and now I've become “that lady” shouting about how lying can save your life.

Asian men run a higher risk of developing lung cancer…even as never smokers. Being under 50, having under a 20-pack year history, or having quit over 15 years ago means no screening will be offered, even with suspicious symptoms, a family history, or membership of a group already known to be higher risk. We knew my husband sat in a higher risk group and requested low-dose CT screening (the standard of care). We requested it when he turned 50, BUT his never smoker status got us laughed out of more than one Dr office — even offering to pay cash for the appointment, the referral and the low-dose CT itself. Two years later: stage 4.

Were we doing it again, he absolutely smokes, and has smoked for 20 years at 1 pack/day — whether or not he's ever touched a cigarette. Just sayin.

Thanks for sitting through my TedTalk!

The healthcare system is a mess. You see the same pattern everywhere: patients get dismissed, told they're imagining things, or brushed aside simply because they don't fit the standard checklist.

I nearly lost my life at the supposedly world-class Mayo Clinic — they zeroed in on 1 thing and never stepped back to see the whole picture.

I'm so sorry about your husband. What a terrible illness.

Happy to have you with us.
