Compact freezer without an auto-defrost function

My peps stay inside a Styrofoam ice chest, and I put ice packs in the freezer. The auto defrost cycle is not going to last long enough to thaw whatever is inside that ice chest.

this is the model i picked up. works really well. View attachment 10796

Place the peps on the lowest shelf, and it stays at -20°F without issue. We also put the plastic ice packs inside. Make sure you turn the temperature dial all the way to the coldest setting. That dial is located at the back of the freezer.

Right, the dial was there. 6 is the highest it goes. When it's set to 6, there's a fair amount of noise, and the temperature drops to -15 or -20. At 4, it sits near -10 or -11. Much less noise that way. To me, those extra 9 degrees don't seem all that crucial. Though I could be mistaken.

definitely drops below -10. That's at setting 4, and there's still plenty of headroom left. scotty i need more power!

My understanding is that it uses a numbered dial, ranging from 1-7. And yes, you're right. I keep temperature gauges in there. The middle and top sections read about -10, while the lowest section holds steady at -20.

That's a valid observation, and I'm on board with your take. Noise isn't an issue on our end, though. So we're running it as cold as it gets. From what I recall reading, somewhere between -20 and -50 is ideal. Still, -10 works fine.

We ended up choosing this model, after people here on this great forum recommended it. It can reach -40, though for the first week or so I've set it at -30 while we get used to it. I might keep it at -20 long term, since this unit really does get cold. I'm going to order supplies and put together some ice packs to store inside it, so that if the power goes out they should work well as insulators.

There is a readout screen on the front of the freezer, and I have set it to -30. That is the temperature it holds under normal conditions. When I open the freezer, however, it falls to -20 for roughly 10 minutes.
