What I want to share is my own experience, and what I keep seeing in practice, when retatrutide is combined with diet and carb cycling - above all during the fat loss phases.

1. Why does retatrutide work better with carbs?

Plenty of people run retatrutide alongside strict keto or very low-carb diets. I gave that a try as well… and here is what came out of it:

  • energy falls off a cliff
  • performance gets worse
  • sleep gets worse
  • a physical feeling of "stress"

What the drug does:

appetite goes down

insulin sensitivity goes up

fuel utilisation goes up

On the other hand it also:

drives the body's energy demand up

Keep carbohydrates too low and:

  • cortisol climbs
  • output drops
  • recovery drags
  • the plan gets harder to stick to
Take enough carbohydrate and instead:

  • muscle glycogen fills better
  • performance improves
  • stress is lower
  • sleep is better
2. Why carb cycling is superior

Every day does not have to look identical.

Fuel is not burned the same way across days:

  • weights plus cardio day
  • sedentary day

---

What the cycle is for:

  • getting the most performance out
  • keeping a deficit in place
  • dodging metabolic adaptation
  • making it easier to live with

🔵 High days (training)

  • carbs up
  • calories up
  • performance up

🔴 Low days (rest)

  • carbs down
  • a bigger deficit
  • more fat oxidation

3. Adaptation based on body fat percentage

This is the important bit: cycling at 30% body fat does not equal cycling at 12%.

---

PHASE 1: 30% → 22%

Goal: Rapid weight loss + Adherence

  • moderate-to-high calorie deficit

Split:

  • high protein
  • moderate fats
  • carbohydrate 100–150 g daily

At this point extensive cycling is NOT needed yet.

PHASE 2: 22% → 16%

Goal: Optimize performance + continue losing weight

Cycling arrives here:

On training days:

- 150–200 g carbohydrates

On rest days:

- 80–120 g carbohydrates

The energy difference is already obvious at this stage.

PHASE 3: 16% → 13% (key phase)

This is the phase most people break on

  • the body turns more sensitive
  • more cortisol
  • the deficit becomes harder to tolerate

The strategy:

On training days:

  • 150–220 g carbs
  • calories nudged up

On rest days:

- 70–100 g carbs

This is where retatrutide + carbs does wonders:

✔ more energy

✔ less anxiety

✔ a better physique

PHASE 4: 13% → 10% (real definition)

Here, pushing yourself recklessly is no longer an option

The best approach:

On training days:

- 180–250 g carbs

close to maintenance calories

On rest days:

- 60–90 g carbs

Weekly refeed (this one matters):

  • 1 high-carb day
  • maintenance or a small surplus
Which:

  • lifts leptin
  • helps metabolism
  • keeps plateaus away

At the moment I sit at 14% body fat, and I have to be increasingly careful not to cut my carbs any further, because I get mild hypoglycemia and I am only on 2.5 mg of retatrutide.

What do your meal protocols look like?
