for telegram and WhatsApp, do any of you rely on a burner phone or number? on telegram i realize hiding it is possible, but with WhatsApp that doesn't seem to be the case, right? mainly i'm just curious how everyone handles having the account linked to them personally so they can stay fully anonymous in those groups and with supplier contacts, or do you simply decide TG is sufficient and leave it at that?

From what I understand, a lot of these platforms now rely on LIDB checks to block VOIP numbers like Google Voice when you sign up. That makes it harder than it once was, though it can still be done—there are tools and services designed to help with exactly that.

appreciate it, i'll check that out. neither of those is something i've ever touched outside of this, so i just spun up a couple quickly so i could browse and pick things up, but then it hit me "my actual personal details are sitting on this, probably better to set up a fresh one before i really start participating"

I'm not certain this applies here, but I remember there was an /r/phoneverify (or a name close to that) on Reddit where people would charge you 1 or 2 dollars to verify things with their own number. That was mostly for stacking promo deals.

Beyond that, if you're set on solving this and don't mind spending more than a couple of dollars, there are a number of prepaid mobile plans out there.

You could look at smspool.net. I haven't tried it myself, so I can't vouch for it.
SMSPool works well — I rely on it constantly. It simplifies getting a WhatsApp, Telegram, or any other account you might need.

thanks for the pointer, i'll be checking it out shortly.

Do thorough research before you go with a disposable number. Remember that recycling of that number is possible, so maintaining control over it matters. Figure out how to turn on a 2FA Cloud Password for extra protection, and make sure you remain signed in on 2 or more devices so you don't get locked out or have your account taken over.

On Telegram, what steps are needed to keep your number hidden?

I managed to solve it.

In case anyone else wants to know.

Go to Settings, then Privacy, then Phone Number, and choose Nobody
