Are Pens Accurate for Dosing?

Do pens deliver the right dose? They seem convenient and look more official, but I'm wondering how precise they are for dosing. Are reusable pens any good, or is it better to stick with single-use ones? When you're clicking the dial, how do you know you're actually getting the correct dose?
 
Certain pens work well, others do not. For whichever pen you have, fill a cartridge with water, place it inside the pen, attach an empty regular syringe to the cartridge, and then check multiple doses of various sizes repeatedly.
 
If you're checking a pen using a syringe, be sure to flush the syringe with bac water a few times first. Otherwise, your reading will be noticeably inaccurate.

No two pens work the same way. A few have a reputation for giving wrong amounts or "over dosing." Take the v1s — people swear by them because they tend to be accurate and dependable. Are there other v series pens like that? Not really. They're basically trash. What about Novopens? They're known for "over-dosing." That's fine by me. My reta lives in one of them. My advice: begin with a v1 or a novo pen. Pick something on the cheaper side that still works. Then get 2 of them. Check them once they arrive. I check the ones I already own at minimum every 90 days. Nothing lasts forever.
 
Keep in mind that the cartridge being used plays a role in how accurate things are. With a pen, what you want is a consistent, linear push on the plunger. How much volume actually comes out depends on how far the plunger travels and the measurements of the cartridge.

For anything taken once a week, I wouldn't go to the trouble. That said, if you're injecting every day, a pen speeds things up a lot.
