Reta and skin pain

I’d gone roughly a month without reta. During that prior stretch, 2 mg was working well for me — hardly any side effects, and the weight was coming off nicely.

A few days back I took a 2 mg shot. Because it seemed like nothing had actually left the syringe, I went ahead and gave myself another 2 mg. In hindsight, that first one likely did go in, and I can’t say with 100% certainty what my total dose was. I’d estimate it landed somewhere between 4–6 mg.

After that, my skin became extremely sensitive and painful. It’s almost as if I have a severe sunburn — even ordinary contact or clothing feels irritating. Nothing like this ever happened to me while on reta before.

If anyone has dealt with something similar:

  • How long did it last?
  • Did it gradually disappear as the drug wore off?
  • Did you stop dosing completely until it resolved?
  • Was there anything that helped with the discomfort?
At this point I’m unsure whether I’ll pause further injections. Mostly, I want to know if others have had this happen after a sudden dose increase or an accidental double dose.

I’ve come across this before, but I’m curious what makes it painful. The skin sensitivity and the sensation I get from Reta are things I actually enjoy…. My wife feels the same.

A search for Allodynia will turn up a handful of discussion threads

Generalized Skin Sensitivity (Allodynia or Dysesthesia)

    • What it feels like: Tingling, burning, or increased sensitivity across the skin, in which stimuli that would not normally hurt—such as fabric rubbing against the skin or a light touch—become painful. [1, 2, 3]
    • Why it happens: This has been documented with medications such as semaglutide and tirzepatide, and these changes in nerve sensation are believed to relate to the way the nervous system handles signals when doses are increased or metabolism shifts. [1, 2, 3]
    • How to manage: Such sensations are frequently dose-dependent and often get better with time, at a lower dose, or by adjusting the titration schedule under a doctor's guidance

It's been there from the time I began Reta, and it got progressively worse with each dose increase (6 months now). On some days the feeling is extreme — small jolts from the car or my husband's hand on my arm bring sharp pain; on other days it's barely noticeable. Last week I switched to split dosing to see whether that would ease things somewhat - it's too soon to say.

I was on reta 2mg for 3 weeks and decided to titrate up to 3mg for the 4th week. Big mistake, absolutely no reason to do it so soon. The Allodynia came in strong, my face couldn’t touch the pillow kind of strong. It lasted the whole following week, slightly fading out. Zinc and Magnesium helped a lot! I was seriously debating on pinning the next one, but didn’t want to mess my schedule so went on with 2mg hoping it would be ok. 👌🏻 All good now and I’m still taking Zinc and Magnesium because why not. 🙂 I broke my rule of “if it’s not broken, why fix it” and felt the Reta effect full blast.

Honestly, I actually anticipate that sensation kicking in once I've done my injections. Apart from some nausea right after the initial shot, my time on Reta has been almost completely good. I'm on quite a few supplements, so maybe that plays a part.

I also take zinc and magnesium, so you might be right about that.

You’re on to something I’m on zinc and magnesium myself.

I've used supplements in the past as well, though zinc and magnesium weren't among them. That's exactly why I'm 100% convinced both of them made a difference with the Allodynia. There's no chance I'll quit them at this point!

Honestly, this hurts so much, oh my god. It's been around 5 days now, and it really is agonizing hahaha — did it take 2 weeks before you were okay?

That's a really frequent side effect, though luckily it hasn't hit me. Sorry you're dealing with it, man. Hope it passes soon.

As the saying goes, if you're going to be foolish, you'd best be resilient. 😛 You'll just have to endure it. Take a week off, then resume afterwards.
