Online is where this recipe came from, and a little tweaking followed. The result is refreshing, melts your face, clears the sinuses and soothes the stomach - a juice shot. Blending is done in a Ninja food processor. After that the blend goes through a strainer lined with cheesecloth, collected in a large glass Pyrex 4-cup measurer, and the golden liquid is decanted into 2oz. bottles with a small funnel. The cheesecloth comes from my local grocery store - also available online. So is the small plastic funnel I use to transfer to the shot bottles.

RECIPE: (makes 18-20 two-ounce shots)

  • mandarin oranges - 8
  • lemons - 8
  • honey - 4tbs
  • turmeric powder - 4tbs
  • cayenne pepper - 1tbs
  • water - 1.5cups
  • chopped ginger root - 2.5 cups
  • fresh turmeric root - 4-6 chopped pieces
  1. Wash both roots thoroughly - the ginger root and the turmeric root.
  2. Both roots get chopped into .5 - .25in pieces and tossed into the food processor. Subbing in a decent blender works if you own one.
  3. The lemons are halved and their juice squeezed into the food processor.
  4. In goes the water.
  5. The cayenne pepper, the turmeric powder and the honey follow.
  6. Mandarins are halved, peels removed and disposed of, then the orange halves join the mix.
  7. BLEND BLEND BLEND.
  8. A large glass or metal measuring cup goes under your metal strainer (mine is 4cups).
  9. Cheesecloth gets cut large enough to cover the inside of the strainer.
  10. Into the cheesecloth the blended mix goes, strained through into your measuring cup.
  11. Half the contents at a time is how I work - this recipe yields about six to seven cups of liquid.
  12. The small funnel goes into your shot bottle, pour until full, cap it off, then on to the next.
  13. Into the fridge the juice shots go, staying fresh and nice and chill.
Liking-wise, the turmeric powder and cayenne pepper are yours to adjust. Too many shots at once for you and a smaller batch wanted? Just halve the recipe. Big batches are my preference, since two a day is the habit - first thing in the morning and one at night right before bed.
