RIP Glen Hansard

As a busker, he ranked among the finest I've ever witnessed, and as a person he was genuinely decent. After a Swell Season concert with Iron and Wine in Albuquerque back in 2008, I got lucky enough to meet him and talk for a short while. All 4 of us who attended that show still look back on it as a magical night, and we're remembering it now with heavy hearts all these years later. No matter how deeply you dive into music, a talent like his was something rare.

The movie "Once" opens with a scene that captures a bit of who he was:

Say It To Me Now by Glen Hansard

Beyond that, spending a few minutes on the comment section under that video is well worth it..

In 2008, Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova (Swell Season) went on tour with Iron and Wine. Iron and Wine is incredible as well; that night was magical for everyone there.

I had no idea who he was, but after just 3 notes I realized his music is all I ever want to listen to from now on.
Glad you're here with us — bittersweet as the reason is. Here's one more thing you might like.

What a lovely movie Once turned out to be. That soundtrack means so much to me. Losing yet another brilliant musician leaves me genuinely heartbroken.

Once is a truly remarkable movie. After renting the DVD, I checked out the behind-the-scenes material, and it turns out Glen and the actress opposite him weren't professional actors at all—they were cast thanks to their extraordinary musical ability…and the performances they deliver rank among the finest, most moving acting I've come across. Possibly the greatest musical ever made. Such a tragedy: for those close to him, for Ireland, for everyone who recognizes beauty.
