Hi all, putting an introduction up on here struck me as good practice!
My mid twenties are where I am, and my weight has always pendulum'd (probably between 23 & 33 BMI). Getting myself warmed up to GLP-1 took roughly a year of slow work. The needle was the first blocker, until a cursory Google showed me the pen needles are about as friendly as a needle gets while remaining one. Resistance continued after that anyway, since I knew I could lose weight under my own steam — so paying for help looked like a bad move at the time.
Then, late last year, I heard someone who has always looked visibly lean speaking openly about using it. Her view was that the mental peace matters more than the weight loss — being able to decide for yourself without fighting urges. That landed hard: even during stretches when my weight was fine, it was always a stressful balancing act until obesity claimed me again. That realisation sealed the deal.
Mounjaro has been my private prescription for a few weeks, and within almost no time I identified it as something worth sticking with long term. It matches what I'd heard: losing weight isn't the best bit, the relief of escaping the mental strain of constant cravings is. My eating habits now make sense to me as largely a hormone imbalance (willpower clearly has a role too), and fixing that imbalance so I essentially become a "normal person" around food has been nothing short of a joy. Which means one thing is urgent — I NEVER want the old version of my brain back!!!
The obvious downside: in the UK, Eli Lilly will hold a monopoly on tirzepatide for roughly the next ten years, and they already more than doubled Mounjaro's price late last year, which doesn't suggest they're keen on keeping it affordable. Given the new lease on life MJ gives me, funnelling such a large slice of my paycheck into it is painful when that money could go on living that life properly.
There's also the worry of my prescription being pulled once I hit a healthy weight (a long way off, admittedly), because what I mainly use it for is a mental health problem rather than a physical one.
So, hunting a cheaper long-term answer, I landed here! Pouring over the forum and soaking up everything about other people's experiences has been my routine. For now the goal is simply a long-term alternative to tirzepatide — though a year from now, who knows where this journey will have me!
Now I want to contribute properly as a member, so thank you for having me!
