Non-addictive peptide analgesics are a holy grail. By "cracking the code" of snail predators, researchers hope to provide long-term relief for patients with conditions like diabetic neuropathy, shingles, and terminal cancer pain without the risks of dependency (published 3/10/26):

Peptides from snails for pain management

Keyword: ziconotide

although it is extremely effective, it doesn't cross the blood-brain barrier so has to be adminsitered via an implanted pump directly connected to the neural canal which makes it an extremely expensive therapy

@ghreid what caught my eye was conotoxins (pain dampening potential) exist in dozens of cone snail species, "potentially.... 250 or more compounds."
