Hi everyone,
I’m new here and wanted to introduce myself properly. I’m from the U.S., in my 40s, and I’ve struggled with weight for most of my adult life. I’ve done the usual cycle more times than I can count: lose some weight, feel hopeful, life gets stressful, regain it, then start over again. Over the last year I kept hearing more and more about GLP-1 medications, and I started getting curious because so many people seemed to be having real results.
The honest part is that I did not handle it the smartest way at first. Instead of slowing down and going through a proper medical path, I started watching TikTok videos. At first it was just people talking about their weight loss, side effects, meals, and weekly progress. Then the algorithm started showing me more aggressive videos: “affordable options,” “no insurance needed,” “limited spots,” before-and-after clips, and comment sections full of people saying things like “DM me” or “this changed my life.”
One video in particular looked very convincing. It was not flashy in a cartoonish way. It looked like a regular person talking into their phone, explaining how they had struggled with access and then “found another way.” The comments made it feel even more real. People were asking questions, someone claimed their package arrived fast, and a few accounts were saying they had already lost weight. Looking back, I realize a lot of it could have been fake or planted, but at the time I wanted to believe it.
I messaged someone connected to that video. They were friendly at first and made everything sound simple. They asked a few basic questions, used a lot of health-sounding language, and kept reassuring me that many people were doing the same thing. There were red flags: vague answers, pressure to act quickly, no clear pharmacy information, and a lot of “don’t worry, we take care of everything.” I ignored those signs because I was frustrated, embarrassed, and honestly desperate to feel like I was finally doing something.
After I paid, the tone changed. Before payment, replies came within minutes. After payment, I started getting excuses. First it was “processing.” Then “shipping delay.” Then “tracking will update soon.” Then there was supposedly an issue with the label. After that, the messages became shorter and colder. Eventually I was ignored completely. I never received what I thought I was paying for, and I felt stupid, angry, and ashamed.
The money hurt, but the bigger lesson was realizing how easy it is to get manipulated when you are hopeful and vulnerable. TikTok made everything feel normal because I saw the same kind of content over and over until it seemed like everyone was doing it. I know now that social media confidence is not the same thing as safety or legitimacy.
I’m not here to ask for sources or discuss where to get anything. I read the new member rules and understand that this is not the place for that, especially as a new member. I’m here to learn, read, and hopefully reset my approach with more patience and common sense.I’m glad to be here and appreciate the chance to learn from people who have been around this longer than I have.
