Quick hello from someone fairly unremarkable: a 49 year old woman who has made up her mind to overhaul her life during this year. Much like plenty of others in my age group, I have devoted years to being a spouse, a mother, and whatever else was demanded of me. As I head into the final year of my 40s, I resolved that the moment had come to discover MYSELF. This wasn't something that appeared overnight - the struggle has gone on for years. I'll skip the specifics so nobody gets bored, since countless women (and I'm certain men too) share comparable histories. That choice meant leaving a secure but hated job, releasing friendships that were entirely one sided, admitting I hadn't been the friend I ought to have been, having extremely EXTREMELY hard talks with my husband, and choosing to work at preserving our marriage, because 25 years poured into a shared life isn't something you abandon in a single decision. The past several years have worn me down mentally, financially, and physically. I also saw my mother decline rapidly and made a promise to myself that I wouldn't follow her path. This is my year of transformation. I got bloodwork done for the first time in roughly 15 years, and I'm repairing what's damaged. I've dropped 23 lbs so far, with another 40-50 to go. I'm here hoping to find people who think alike - the world is packed with critics and folks who want you to remain stuck. I am not that kind of person.

Thanks for putting that out there. I'm 55, married for 30 years, and raising a 12-year-old boy — and a lot of your words landed with me. Our roads aren't the same, but that jolt of suddenly seeing how many years went into being whatever everyone else required, rather than being yourself, is something I know.

Leaving a job that drains you, rethinking who your friends are, and pushing through the tough talks in a 30-year marriage — that takes guts, and I respect it. Few people ever go there. And watching a parent fade is its own kind of pain; I've had my own version of that moment of “I don’t want to end up there.”

Also, 23 pounds down is amazing. That's not luck — that's commitment and discipline.

You're right—the world has plenty of critics. But it also has people who get it and want to see others grow. You’re definitely not alone in this. Here’s to your year of transformation. You’re already well into it.

It really is the moment. Seeing my daughters grow up, I don’t want them to just accept less… and then it hit me that I’ve been modeling that very thing. Some might call it a midlife crisis, but I’m embracing it fully. Here’s to the coming 30-40 years!
