Patients keep raising the topic of peptides more frequently. Since I practice in surgery, I am trying to get a handle on this. To be honest, my curiosity has been sparked, and as someone in midlife dealing with the usual weekend warrior soreness and stiffness, I am [[Q1]]

I would like to know what safety standards look like before the FDA reclassifies -157 and 500 into cat 1…

I am also wondering how recovery peptides affect prehab ahead of surgery and anesthesia. (gLPs are advised to be paused x 1week before anesthesia; do other peptides carry any risks?)

Are there any legal or licensure concerns for physicians who buy peptides for “research” purposes to keep at home?

Cheers

That’s a solid question—it’s being raised much more often these days.

Peptides hold appeal and could have real value, particularly around inflammation and recovery. Many patients (and frankly doctors as well) are interested, and there’s a reason for that.

As I see it, the core concern isn’t really the peptides on their own, but rather reliable quality / dosing, plus robust human data.

So the takeaway is less “these are risky” and more “the full picture isn’t clear yet.”

Glad to have you in this community.

I've also just arrived, and I wanted to express that it means a lot to see a doctor joining this space to gain knowledge about this side of the field. As rules tighten and costs shift—especially when insurance refuses to pay for particular drugs and peptides—I think a growing number of people will end up looking in this direction. So the fact that you're familiarizing yourself with it and are at peace with it, both personally and possibly for those you treat, speaks volumes and eases some of my own hesitation too.
